The Market School

A Gap Year is a purposeful break taken between finishing high school and starting university or the workforce.

It isn’t about "taking time off"—it’s about taking time on. A gap year gives you the space to step away from textbooks, figure out what you are genuinely passionate about, and build real-world confidence. It is a structured year to enter the market, learn how the things your most interested inworld works, and design your next steps with clarity.

The Market School Camp

The Market School Camp is a hands-on, micro-experience for students during the summer, after-school hours, or school breaks.

Think of the camp as a neighborhood adventure mixed with real-world skills. Instead of standard camp activities or sitting behind a screen, learners get out onto the vibrant streets of Kensington Market. It is designed to be highly flexible, giving students a dynamic, safe, and productive way to spend their out-of-school time while building confidence, discovering hidden talents, and connecting with their local community.

Book

The classroom is no longer confined to four walls. The future of learning is on the pavement and on the ground.

The Market School: The Book is an upcoming guide and manifesto on the power of place-based education, real-world learning, and community resilience. Written as an ongoing, live reflection of our work directly on the streets of Toronto, this book outlines the exact blueprint used to turn local neighborhood hubs like Kensington Market into vibrant, modern campuses.

At the Camp

You will participate by diving straight into the daily action of the market through short, high-energy challenges built around your interests.

Depending on when you join us—whether for a week-long summer sprint or a recurring after-school program—you will rotate through our three neighborhood spaces:

  • At The Stall: You’ll team up to tackle urban food challenges, learn where our food comes from, and design creative ways to reduce local food waste.

  • At The Shelf: You’ll explore vintage and retail shops to learn the basics of photography, curation, and how to tell a compelling story about unique objects.

  • At The Counter: You’ll step behind the scenes of local cafes to master the art of hospitality, teamwork, and great communication under pressure.

Every camp session wraps up with a mini-showcase where you share your favorite market discoveries and team projects with family and local business owners.

All the While, & Under Development

The Market School: The Book is currently a work in progress. We are actively writing, testing frameworks, and gathering stories from our local pilots.
